ATLS® Reverification Course – 11th Edition

In Campus

Course Overview

One-Day Royal College of Surgeons of England Course at PLAB Guide Training Centre

Refresh your trauma knowledge, update your practical approach and reverify your ATLS® Provider status without repeating the full two-day provider course.

The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS®) Reverification Course – 11th Edition is a one-day revision and reassessment programme for experienced ATLS® Providers who regularly manage severely injured patients.

PLAB Guide Training Centre is an approved ATLS® course centre in Manchester, delivering the official Royal College of Surgeons of England ATLS® Reverification programme.

ATLS® Provider status is valid for four years. Eligible providers may complete the Reverification course up to six months after their Provider status has expired. If more than six months have passed after expiry, candidates must normally repeat the full two-day ATLS® Provider course. (rcseng.ac.uk)

Who Is This Course For?

The ATLS® Reverification course is intended for existing ATLS® Providers who:

  • Regularly manage severely injured patients

  • Have previously completed the ATLS® Provider course

  • Need to renew their ATLS® Provider status

  • Completed their previous ATLS® course within the last four and a half years

  • Remain familiar with trauma resuscitation and ATLS® principles

RCS England advises that clinicians who do not regularly manage severely injured patients should reverify by completing the full two-day ATLS® Provider course instead. The one-day Reverification course assumes a high degree of familiarity with trauma assessment and resuscitation.

Important Eligibility Requirement

All candidates must provide evidence of their existing ATLS® Provider status when applying for the Reverification course.

Provider status obtained outside the UK may require verification through the American College of Surgeons before the booking can be confirmed.

Course Format

ATLS® Reverification is a hybrid programme consisting of:

  • Mandatory pre-course e-learning

  • One full day of face-to-face training

  • Interactive discussions

  • Clinical trauma scenarios

  • Embedded practical skills

  • Demonstrations

  • Formal assessment

The mandatory online learning must be completed in full by the deadline specified by RCS England before attending the face-to-face course.

What You Will Refresh

The course revisits the core principles of the ATLS® approach, helping experienced providers consolidate a safe and systematic method for managing seriously injured patients.

  3. Breathing and ventilation

  4. Circulation and haemorrhage control

  5. Disability and neurological assessment

Candidates refresh their approach to:

  • Oxygenation

  • Ventilation

  • Cervical spine considerations

  • Escalation to advanced airway management

  • Emergency surgical airway principles

RCS England specifically includes airway and ventilatory management, including cricothyroidotomy, among the areas refreshed during ATLS® Reverification.

Candidates refresh:

  • Clear prioritisation

  • Effective delegation

  • Closed-loop communication

  • Appropriate escalation

  • Structured reassessment

RCS England identifies effective use of the standardised language of trauma care as a formal learning outcome of the course.

Learning Outcomes

Following successful completion, candidates should be able to:

  • Demonstrate refreshed knowledge of ATLS® principles

  • Apply the ATLS® approach to the immediate management of trauma

  • Recognise and treat life-threatening injuries in priority order

  • Use a systematic trauma-assessment framework

  • Communicate using standardised trauma terminology

  • Integrate practical and theoretical trauma-management skills

  • Reassess and escalate appropriately

  • Continue providing safe, structured trauma care

Assessment

Candidates must meet the current RCS England ATLS® Reverification assessment requirements.

The course assumes prior ATLS® knowledge and recent trauma-management experience, so candidates should prepare thoroughly and complete all mandatory online learning before attendance.

Booking and attendance do not automatically guarantee successful reverification.

Reverification and Provider Status

Successful completion renews the candidate’s ATLS® Provider status.

ATLS® Provider status is valid for four years. The Reverification course may be completed at any point within the permitted renewal period, including up to six months after expiry.

Candidates who exceed the six-month post-expiry window must normally complete the full two-day ATLS® Provider course again.

CPD Points

The current ATLS® Reverification Course – 11th Edition carries 10 CPD points from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Instructor Potential

Eligible candidates may also be identified as having ATLS® Instructor Potential (IP) during an ATLS® Reverification course.

RCS England confirms that Instructor Potential can be awarded following either an ATLS® Provider or ATLS® Reverification course, subject to the candidate meeting the relevant standards and instructor eligibility requirements.

Instructor Potential is based on faculty assessment and cannot be guaranteed.
