Course overview

EPALS follows the Resuscitation Council UK provider programme, and its running order is fixed, so every centre teaches it in the same sequence. The course builds a systematic approach to the child who is getting sicker, then adds the skills and team working you need if that child arrests.

Day one: recognition, core skills and cardiac arrest

The first day opens with recognising and managing the seriously ill child, followed by paediatric basic life support with bag-mask ventilation and choking management. Small groups rotate through airway and ventilation and vascular access skill stations, then put them to work in teaching simulations on respiratory and circulatory failure. The afternoon covers the paediatric ALS algorithm, safe team-based defibrillation and cardiorespiratory arrest simulations, and closes with a meeting with your faculty mentor.

Day two: beyond the arrest

Day two widens the focus to post-resuscitation care, arrhythmias with a pulse and the seriously injured child, each taught through an interactive workshop followed by simulations. Further scenarios cover common paediatric emergencies before the practical assessments in the afternoon, then results and course evaluation.

Who this course is for

EPALS is for healthcare professionals who may be called on to assess, treat or resuscitate a deteriorating child and want to do it with confidence rather than guesswork. It suits clinicians who could be leading, or working within, a paediatric resuscitation team on a children's ward, in an emergency department or in critical care.

If you need paediatric emergency skills but would not normally lead advanced paediatric resuscitation, the Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS) course may be a better fit.

Entry requirements

  • A clinical role in which you may be expected to manage paediatric emergencies. You are responsible for checking that EPALS suits your role and experience.
  • Your professional registration number and registering body (for example GMC or NMC) at the time of booking.
  • Completion of all required pre-course reading, online learning and assessments before the course. Candidates who have not completed them may be unable to take part.
  • Identification on the day, in the same name you booked under.
  • Full attendance on your booked course days. Late arrival or early departure can affect your eligibility for assessment.

What you will learn

  • Assess a seriously ill or injured child using a structured, systematic approach
  • Recognise respiratory distress and respiratory failure and begin appropriate treatment
  • Identify shock and circulatory failure and manage it promptly
  • Deliver effective paediatric basic life support, including bag-mask ventilation and choking management
  • Lead or support a team through the paediatric advanced life support algorithm
  • Perform safe, team-based defibrillation and use emergency medications appropriately
  • Provide initial assessment and management for the seriously injured child
  • Reassess, stabilise and safely escalate care after resuscitation

Course content

  1. 1 Recognising the seriously ill child

    A demonstration and lecture introduce the structured assessment used throughout EPALS, so you can spot early deterioration and prioritise treatment.

  2. 2 Paediatric basic life support and choking

    Practise BLS with bag-mask ventilation at a 15:2 ratio and choking management. This skill station is continuously assessed.

  3. 3 Airway, ventilation and vascular access

    Rotating skill stations cover airway opening and ventilation techniques alongside emergency vascular access in infants and children.

  4. 4 Respiratory and circulatory failure

    Teaching simulations apply your assessment and skills to children in respiratory failure and circulatory failure, working as a small team.

  5. 5 Cardiorespiratory arrest and safe defibrillation

    A lecture on the paediatric ALS algorithm leads into a team demonstration, a safe defibrillation skill station and cardiac arrest simulations.

  6. 6 Post-resuscitation care and arrhythmias with a pulse

    Interactive workshops and simulations on stabilising the child after return of circulation and on managing arrhythmias in a child with a pulse.

  7. 7 Managing the seriously injured child

    A trauma workshop is followed by three teaching simulations on the initial assessment and management of paediatric trauma.

  8. 8 Paediatric emergencies and final assessment

    Scenarios on common paediatric emergencies, including bronchiolitis and pyelonephritis, followed by the practical assessments and results.

Frequently asked questions

How long is an EPALS certificate valid for?
The Resuscitation Council UK EPALS Provider certificate lasts four years. You and your employer can check it through the Resuscitation Council UK system, so you do not need a paper copy to prove it is current. Plan your recertification before it expires to avoid a gap.
Should I book EPALS or PILS?
Choose EPALS if your role means you could lead or work within an advanced paediatric resuscitation team. PILS is a shorter course for staff who need to recognise a deteriorating child and start resuscitation, but who would usually hand over to a specialist team. If you are unsure, email resus@plabguide.co.uk with your role and we will advise.
What is the difference between EPALS and APLS?
Both are advanced paediatric life support provider courses for clinicians who manage critically ill children. EPALS is certified by the Resuscitation Council UK, while APLS is run under the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG). We are approved to deliver both. Some employers and training programmes name a specific course, so check what your role requires before booking.
Can I recertify my EPALS in one day?
Yes. If you already hold an EPALS Provider certificate, you can choose the EPALS recertification option when booking. It covers day two of the course only, including the practical assessments. If you are not sure whether your current certificate makes you eligible, contact resus@plabguide.co.uk before you book.
How much preparation do I need to do before the course?
A significant amount. Your course materials and pre-course learning instructions arrive in advance, and all required reading, online learning and assessments must be finished before the first day. Candidates who have not completed the mandatory preparation may not be able to take part, so booking early gives you the most time to study.
Do I have to attend every session?
Yes. Full attendance is mandatory on each day you are booked on. Arriving late, leaving early or missing any part of the course can mean you are refused admission or become ineligible for assessment and certification, so allow some margin in your travel and shift plans.
Can medical or nursing students take EPALS?
Only in specific circumstances. Final-year healthcare students may be eligible where an established local arrangement is in place, for example through their university or placement provider. Please contact resus@plabguide.co.uk before booking so we can confirm whether we can accept your place.
Is there parking at the training centre?
Yes. The centre has free dedicated parking, and free on-road parking is also available. The venue at 308 Moseley Road in Levenshulme is easy to reach by road and by public transport from across Manchester and the surrounding areas.
Can my employer pay, or can I pay a deposit?
Yes to both. At checkout you can pay yourself, have the payment link sent to your employer with an optional purchase order or cost code, or pay a deposit to confirm your place and settle the balance later with no interest added. If you need an invoice instead of a payment link, say so when booking.
Do I need to bring identification?
Yes. The name you give when booking must match the identification you present on the course, so bring an ID document in that name. Please also double-check your email and postal address when booking so your course materials reach you on time.
