Train as an ILS instructor in Manchester

If you were identified as having Instructor Potential on your provider course, the ILS instructor course (ILSi) is your next step. This one-day Resuscitation Council UK course at our Levenshulme centre turns your clinical competence into teaching skill, preparing you to help deliver Immediate Life Support and Paediatric Immediate Life Support courses.

ILSi is not open entry. You will normally need a formal Instructor Potential recommendation and an invitation to progress along the RCUK instructor pathway, and we may ask for evidence of your eligibility before confirming your booking.

Pre-course materials should reach you at least four weeks before the course where possible, so choose a date below as soon as your invitation arrives.

Course overview

ILSi runs over one full day and is built around doing rather than listening. Short interactive teaching sessions and educational discussions introduce how adults learn, and you then put that into practice straight away through practical teaching exercises.

A large part of the day is spent teaching the way ILS and PILS courses are actually run. You will teach at skills stations, facilitate simulated clinical scenarios and lead scenario-based discussions, then practise assessing candidates and giving feedback. Faculty observe and assess you throughout.

Every candidate delivers an allocated teaching session, prepared in advance from the pre-course materials, so expect to take an active role from the start.

After the course

Successful candidates move to the next stage of the Resuscitation Council UK instructor pathway as New Instructor Candidates. You will normally be supported and assessed while teaching on your first two relevant provider courses. You are responsible for arranging these teaching opportunities and completing the instructor-development process within the required timeframe. Completing the classroom day alone does not complete the instructor pathway.

Who this course is for

This course is for experienced healthcare professionals who already hold the relevant Resuscitation Council UK provider qualification and want to move from delivering resuscitation to teaching it. If you enjoy helping colleagues improve and would like to contribute to ILS and PILS training, ILSi gives you a recognised starting point.

Beyond the instructor role itself, you will develop formal clinical teaching skills, gain confidence facilitating simulation, and learn to assess candidates fairly and give feedback that genuinely helps. These skills carry across clinical education and strengthen your educational and professional portfolio.

Entry requirements

Eligibility

• The relevant Resuscitation Council UK provider qualification
• A formal recommendation of Instructor Potential and the appropriate invitation to progress
• Current knowledge and practical competence in ILS or PILS
• Willingness to teach and support other healthcare professionals, and to communicate effectively in a clinical education setting

You cannot normally enrol simply because you would like to become an instructor. We may ask for evidence of Instructor Potential and eligibility before your booking is confirmed.
