Our eILS course in Manchester is the blended version of the Resuscitation Council UK Immediate Life Support course: you complete the e-learning online, then attend a half-day practical session at our Levenshulme centre. The eILS course in Manchester leads to the same Resuscitation Council UK Immediate Life Support certificate as the full-day course, with far less time away from work. You study the theory online first, then spend one afternoon at our Levenshulme training centre putting it into practice on manikins and in simulated emergencies.

Because the practical session is short and hands-on, preparation matters. Arrive with the e-learning finished and you will spend the afternoon practising ABCDE assessment, airway skills, CPR and defibrillation rather than sitting through lectures. Course overview

eILS is the blended format of the Resuscitation Council UK Immediate Life Support course. It covers the same ground as the one-day ILS course: recognising and treating the deteriorating adult, preventing cardiorespiratory arrest and managing cardiac arrest until a specialist team or experienced help arrives. The difference is that the theory moves into e-learning, so your time in the classroom is spent on practical skills.

Before the course

You complete the online modules and read the ILS manual, which follows the 2025 UK Resuscitation Guidelines. Aim to arrive confident with adult basic life support, the ABCDE approach, airway management, recognising cardiac arrest, defibrillation and resuscitation team roles.

The practical afternoon

The face-to-face session runs from 2pm to 6pm. You rotate through skill stations for airway management, CPR and defibrillation, then apply those skills in ABCDE assessment workshops and cardiac arrest simulations. You take turns as a team member and as the initial leader, with instructor feedback after every scenario. The full course programme is available to download from the booking page.

This course suits healthcare professionals who could be first on the scene when an adult patient deteriorates or arrests, and who need to keep that patient safe until senior help arrives. You may be a member of a resuscitation team, or you may work somewhere the arrest team is not immediately at hand. You may also need recognised resuscitation training for a new post or for your professional development. eILS lets you gain the ILS certificate without losing a full day, which helps when your shift pattern makes a whole day away hard to arrange.

Entry requirements

You must complete all the required pre-course e-learning, reading and assessments before you attend. If you arrive without doing this preparation, you may not be able to take part in or complete the course.

  • Finish the eILS e-learning before your practical session
  • Read the ILS manual. You can collect a printed copy from our office or have it posted to you
  • Be familiar with adult basic life support, ABCDE assessment and defibrillation
  • Attend the whole session. If you arrive late or miss part of it, you may not be assessed
  • When booking, give the email address for your RCUK account and your professional body (and your registration number, if you have one)

Course content

  1. 1 Online e-learning and pre-course reading

    Work through the RCUK eILS e-learning and the ILS manual at your own pace before the practical session. This theory underpins every skill station and scenario on the day.

  2. 2 ABCDE assessment workshop

    Practise a structured, repeatable assessment of the acutely unwell adult. You work through simulated patients, deciding what to treat at each step and when to escalate.

  3. 3 Airway management

    Hands-on practice of simple airway manoeuvres and ventilation on manikins, with instructor coaching on technique.

  4. 4 High-quality CPR and defibrillation

    Refine chest compression quality and learn to use both automated external and manual defibrillators safely within the resuscitation algorithm.

  5. 5 Cardiac arrest simulations

    Bring every skill together in realistic adult cardiac arrest scenarios, including the search for potentially reversible causes.

  6. 6 Teamwork, leadership and feedback

    Rotate between team member and initial leader roles, with structured instructor feedback after each scenario on your clinical decisions and communication.

What is the difference between eILS and the full-day ILS course?
Both lead to the Resuscitation Council UK ILS Provider certificate. On eILS you study the theory through e-learning before attending, so the face-to-face part is a single afternoon of practical skills and simulation from 2pm to 6pm. The full-day course teaches everything in the classroom. eILS suits people who are comfortable with self-directed study and want less time away from work.
When should I complete the eILS e-learning?
You must finish all the required e-learning, reading and assessments before your practical session. Book early enough to give yourself time to prepare, because the afternoon is spent on practical skills rather than theory. Candidates who have not completed the preparation may not be able to take part in or complete the course.
How long is the ILS certificate valid for?
The Resuscitation Council UK ILS Provider certificate is valid for one year from the date you complete the course. To stay certified, complete an appropriate ILS recertification course or repeat the provider course before your certificate expires.
Can I do ePILS on the same day?
Yes. ePILS runs in the morning from 9am to 1pm, before the eILS afternoon session. Adding ePILS when you book your eILS place saves £25, and you leave with training in both adult and paediatric immediate life support from a single day at our Manchester centre.
Do I get a copy of the ILS manual?
Yes. The ILS manual follows the 2025 UK Resuscitation Guidelines. You can collect a printed copy from our office, or choose postage when you book and we will send it to the address you provide. Please check your address carefully so it arrives in good time.
Is there parking at the training centre?
Yes. There is free dedicated car parking at the centre on Moseley Road in Levenshulme, plus free on-road parking nearby. The centre is also easy to reach by train and bus.
What happens if I do not pass?
Certificates are issued only to candidates who meet the required attendance, participation and assessment standards, so attending alone does not guarantee a pass. If you have questions about your result or your options afterwards, contact our resuscitation team at resus@plabguide.co.uk.
Can my employer pay for the course?
Yes. When booking, choose "My employer is paying" and enter the organisation and the person who authorises payment. We send the payment link to both of you, and you can add a purchase order or cost code. If your employer needs an invoice instead, say so in the booking form.
What happens if I arrive late?
Full attendance is mandatory because the practical session is short and assessed continuously. If you arrive late or miss part of the session, you may be refused admission or be unable to be assessed and certified, so please plan your journey to arrive before 2pm.
