When a baby stops breathing or a toddler starts choking, the first few minutes matter most. This paediatric first aid course in Manchester gives you two full days of hands-on practice, so you can act calmly and correctly while help is on the way.
You will work towards the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF). This is the full qualification that early years settings in England use to meet the Early Years Foundation Stage paediatric first aid requirement. Training runs in small groups at our Levenshulme centre in south Manchester, using infant and child resuscitation manikins.

Course overview
Across two days you cover the full Level 3 paediatric first aid syllabus, moving from the basics of keeping a scene safe to managing serious illness and injury in babies and children.
Resuscitation and airway
You begin with the role of the paediatric first aider and how to assess an emergency. You then practise the techniques that differ between infants and children: airway positioning, rescue breaths, hand and finger placement, and compression depth and rate. Defibrillator use, the recovery position and choking management for both age groups are practised repeatedly on manikins.
Illness and injury
The second part of the course covers childhood emergencies such as anaphylaxis, asthma, meningitis, seizures and febrile convulsions, diabetic emergencies and shock. The focus is on early recognition and prompt escalation. You also learn to manage bleeding, burns and scalds, fractures, head and spinal injuries, eye injuries, poisoning, and bites and stings, while avoiding actions that could cause further harm.
How the days run
Short instructor-led sessions and demonstrations are followed by practice, group activities and realistic scenarios. Your instructor observes you throughout and gives structured feedback. Practical and theory assessments take place during the course.
Who this course is for
This course is for anyone who needs a full paediatric first aid certificate, rather than a basic awareness session. Under the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, early years providers in England must have at least one person with a current, full paediatric first aid certificate on the premises whenever children are present. That person must also be available on outings.
If you manage a setting, think about how many children you care for, your staff rotas, the layout of your building and how quickly a first aider can reach any room. Many settings need more than one qualified member of staff. The course also suits newly qualified practitioners with a Level 2 or Level 3 childcare qualification, as well as parents and carers who want real confidence in an emergency.

Entry requirements
There are no formal prerequisites. You will need to:
- Attend both days in full. Late arrival or leaving early may mean you cannot be assessed.
- Bring valid photo ID, such as a driving licence, passport or BRP, in the same name as your booking.
- Wear comfortable clothing and footwear. The practical work involves kneeling, bending and CPR at floor level.
- Tell us in advance about any disability, injury, health condition or learning need so that we can consider reasonable adjustments.
- Check that your name and postal address are correct when booking, because your certificate is issued from these details.
What you will learn
- Assess an emergency involving an infant or child and keep everyone safe
- Deliver effective CPR to an unresponsive infant and to an unresponsive child
- Use an automated external defibrillator safely during paediatric resuscitation
- Manage mild and severe choking in infants and children, including if they become unresponsive
- Recognise and respond to anaphylaxis, asthma, meningitis, seizures and diabetic emergencies
- Control bleeding and give first aid for burns, fractures, and head and spinal injuries
- Place a breathing, unresponsive child in the recovery position and monitor them
- Communicate clearly with parents and emergency services and record incidents correctly

1 The paediatric first aider and emergency assessment
Your role and responsibilities, how to approach an incident safely and how to check an infant's or child's response, airway and breathing. -
2 Infant and child CPR and defibrillation
Hands-on resuscitation practice showing how technique changes between babies and children, including using an AED and keeping interruptions to a minimum. -
3 Choking and airway obstruction
Recognising mild and severe choking in conscious infants and children, what to do if they become unresponsive, and why medical assessment is needed afterwards. -
4 Serious illness and medical emergencies
Recognising and escalating childhood emergencies, including anaphylaxis, asthma, meningitis, seizures, febrile convulsions, diabetic emergencies, shock and sudden deterioration. -
5 Bleeding, wounds and injuries
Immediate care for external bleeding, wounds, burns and scalds, fractures, head, spinal and eye injuries, poisoning, and bites and stings. -
6 Monitoring, handover and reporting
Monitoring a child until professional help arrives, communicating with parents, carers and emergency services, and recording incidents correctly.
