Paediatric first aid training in Manchester for nurseries, childminders and schools

Our paediatric first aid course in Manchester leads to the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF). It is the full paediatric first aid qualification, designed to meet the paediatric first aid training requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework in England.

You can take it in one of two ways: two full days in our classroom, or six hours of online learning followed by one classroom day. Both formats lead to the same qualification and include the same practical assessments, which always take place face to face at PLAB Guide Training Centre in Levenshulme.

Groups are limited to 12 learners per trainer, so choose a date below and book early.

Why train in paediatric first aid with PLAB Guide in Manchester

We teach in small groups with plenty of hands-on practice on infant and child manikins, and your practical assessments are built into the classroom days, so you leave knowing you can act.

  • EYFS-ready qualification: the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF), qualification number 603/0785/7, valid for three years and checkable through Qualsafe's online certificate verification. PLAB Guide Training Centre is a Qualsafe Awards Approved Centre (No. 908553).
  • Two ways to train: two days face to face (£100 + VAT), or six hours of online learning plus one classroom day (£75 + VAT). Same qualification, same face-to-face assessments.
  • Monthly dates: the two-day course on a Monday and Tuesday and the blended classroom day on the Wednesday of the same week, every month.
  • Training for your nursery, school or team: one price for up to 12 learners at our venue or at your setting in Greater Manchester: £750 + VAT for two days face to face, or £540 + VAT blended. Request a Paediatric First Aid group booking.
  • Getting here: the training rooms are on the first and second floors and reached by stairs only, so contact us before you book if you have access or learning-support needs. There is limited free parking on site, plus free on-street parking nearby, both on a first-come, first-served basis.

Public courses run every month at our Levenshulme centre: the two-day course on the Monday and Tuesday after the first Friday of the month, the blended classroom day on the Wednesday of the same week, and our one-day Emergency Paediatric First Aid course on the Friday. See the dates below.

Both prices include tuition, course reference materials, assessment and your Qualsafe certificate. The blended price also includes access to the online learning.

How the two-day course runs

Day one covers emergency paediatric first aid: assessing an incident, infant and child CPR with an AED, choking, the unresponsive casualty, bleeding and shock. Day two covers illness and injury, from fractures and head injuries to asthma, meningitis, burns and anaphylaxis. Short demonstrations are followed by hands-on practice on infant and child manikins. Your trainer assesses your practical skills as you go, and you sit a short multiple-choice paper on each day.

How blended learning works

  • After you book, we enrol you on Qualsafe's online learning platform.
  • You complete six hours of online learning there before your classroom day. You cannot start the classroom day until it is finished.
  • You must provide the evidence of completion we ask for before the classroom day.
  • The classroom day covers the practical skills and all of the assessments, which take place face to face.
  • The online learning on its own does not lead to the qualification. You achieve it only after passing every practical and theory assessment.
  • Blended learning reduces the time you spend in the classroom. It does not reduce the total training: the full course is still at least 12 hours.

Who this course is for

This course is for anyone with responsibility for babies and children who needs the full paediatric first aid qualification rather than a short awareness session.

The EYFS framework requires early years providers in England to have at least one person with a current, full paediatric first aid certificate on the premises and on outings whenever children are present. Staff who gained a level 2 or level 3 early years qualification since 30 June 2016 must also obtain a paediatric first aid qualification within three months of starting work to count in staff-to-child ratios.

Entry requirements

  • You must be at least 14 years old on the first day of training.
  • You must be able to carry out practical tasks at floor level, such as CPR on a manikin.
  • There are no other formal entry requirements. Qualsafe recommends literacy and numeracy at Level 1 or above.
  • Bring photo ID in the same name as your booking.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes, such as trousers and trainers.
  • Tell us before you book about any disability, injury, health condition or learning need, so that we can discuss reasonable adjustments.

What you will learn

  • Explain the role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider, including recording incidents
  • Assess an emergency involving an infant or child safely and call for help
  • Give CPR and use an AED on an unresponsive infant and an unresponsive child
  • Help an infant or child who is choking, and care for one who is unresponsive but breathing
  • Control external bleeding and recognise and manage shock
  • Give first aid for fractures, sprains, and head and spinal injuries
  • Recognise and respond to asthma, allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, meningitis, febrile convulsions and hypoglycaemia
  • Give first aid for burns and scalds, electric shock, poisoning, extremes of temperature, and eye, ear and nose conditions

Course content

  1. 1 The paediatric first aider and emergency assessment

    Your role and responsibilities, how to approach an incident safely and how to check an infant's or child's response, airway and breathing.

  2. 2 Infant and child CPR and defibrillation

    Hands-on resuscitation practice showing how technique changes between babies and children, including using an AED and keeping interruptions to a minimum.

  3. 3 Choking and airway obstruction

    Recognising mild and severe choking in conscious infants and children, what to do if they become unresponsive, and why medical assessment is needed afterwards.

  4. 4 Serious illness and medical emergencies

    Recognising and escalating childhood emergencies, including anaphylaxis, asthma, meningitis, seizures, febrile convulsions, diabetic emergencies, shock and sudden deterioration.

  5. 5 Bleeding, wounds and injuries

    Immediate care for external bleeding, wounds, burns and scalds, fractures, head, spinal and eye injuries, poisoning, and bites and stings.

  6. 6 Monitoring, handover and reporting

    Monitoring a child until professional help arrives, communicating with parents, carers and emergency services, and recording incidents correctly.

Does this course meet EYFS requirements?
Yes. The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is a full paediatric first aid qualification designed to meet the paediatric first aid training requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework in England. Both our two-day and blended formats lead to this full qualification. Your setting remains responsible for checking that its first aid cover meets its own needs.
Should I choose two days face to face or blended learning?
Both lead to the same qualification and the same certificate. Choose two days face to face if you prefer to learn everything with a trainer in the room. Choose blended learning if you are comfortable studying online and want to spend only one day in the classroom. The two-day course costs £100 + VAT and the blended course costs £75 + VAT.
How does the blended format work?
After you book, we enrol you on Qualsafe's online learning platform. You complete the six hours of online learning there before your classroom day and send us the evidence of completion we ask for. Emergency Paediatric First Aid is a separate, shorter one-day qualification that covers life-threatening emergencies only. This course is the full Paediatric First Aid qualification, which adds illness and injury such as fractures, asthma, meningitis, burns and anaphylaxis. The one classroom day in our blended format is part of the full course and is not the same as the one-day emergency course.
How is the course assessed?
Your trainer observes seven practical assessments during the classroom sessions, and you complete two multiple-choice theory papers. You must pass all of them to achieve the qualification.
How long is the certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for three years. Qualsafe recommends annual refresher training to keep your skills current. To renew the certificate, you need to take the full qualification again before it expires.

The training rooms are on the first and second floors of 308 Moseley Road and can be reached by stairs only. Please contact us before booking if you have accessibility, learning-support or practical-assessment needs so we can discuss reasonable adjustments.
