Our Emergency First Aid at Work course in Manchester is a one-day, hands-on programme that leads to the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF). It is built for staff appointed as emergency first aiders in offices, shops, schools, care settings, warehouses and other workplaces. You practise CPR, AED use, choking, bleeding control and the recovery position at our Levenshulme centre, then leave with a certificate valid for three years.

Course overview

The course follows the order in which you would deal with a real incident at work. It starts with your role as an emergency first aider: personal safety, infection prevention, consent, talking to the casualty, and how to record and report what happened. You then learn a structured way to check for danger, find out whether the casualty responds and decide what needs doing first.

The central part of the day covers life-threatening emergencies. You open the airway, check breathing, place a casualty in the recovery position, give adult CPR with rescue breaths, and switch on and follow an automated external defibrillator. After that you move on to choking, serious external bleeding and shock, and finish with seizures and common minor injuries such as cuts, grazes, bruises, splinters, burns and scalds.

Teaching mixes short instructor-led sessions, demonstrations and plenty of hands-on practice, brought together through scenarios based on everyday workplace incidents. Your instructor observes and assesses your skills as you go, with a theory assessment where the qualification requires one.

Who this course is for

This course is for anyone who needs to be the person colleagues turn to when someone collapses, chokes or is badly hurt at work. By the end of the day you will know what to do in those first critical minutes, and you will hold a regulated Level 3 qualification that your employer can count towards its first-aid provision.

Employers should choose the level of training after completing a workplace first-aid needs assessment. Emergency First Aid at Work may be enough where that assessment calls for emergency cover. Where it identifies a need for broader provision, the First Aid at Work course is the better fit.

Entry requirements

No previous first-aid training is needed. Please make sure you can take part fully in the practical work, which includes kneeling on the floor, practising the recovery position and giving chest compressions.

  • Bring valid photo ID (for example a driving licence, passport or BRP). The name must match your booking.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that lets you work safely at floor level.
  • Tell us before the course about any disability, injury, health condition or learning need that may need a reasonable adjustment.
  • Check that your name and details are correct when you book, because your certificate is produced from them.
  • Attend the whole day. Late arrival or leaving early can make you ineligible for assessment.

Your course manual can be collected from our office, or posted to you for an extra charge chosen at checkout.

Course content

  1. 1 The role of the emergency first aider

    What is expected of you when an incident happens at work, from keeping yourself safe to reporting it afterwards. Covers infection prevention, consent and communicating with the casualty.

    By the end of this part you will be able to:

    • Describe your responsibilities as a workplace emergency firs
    • Reduce the risk of infection when giving first aid
    • Record and report a workplace incident

  2. 2 Assessing an incident

    A step-by-step way to approach any emergency: spot hazards, check whether the casualty responds, set priorities and summon the right help quickly.

    By the end of this part you will be able to:

    • Identify hazards before approaching a casualty
    • Check a casualty's level of response
    • Decide on immediate priorities and call for help

  3. 3 The unresponsive casualty

    How to manage someone who is unresponsive but breathing, including airway opening, the recovery position and ongoing monitoring. Includes what to do if the casualty vomits and how to spot when CPR becomes necessary.

    By the end of this part you will be able to:

    • Open the airway and check for normal breathing
    • Place a casualty in the recovery position and monitor them
    • Recognise when breathing stops and CPR is needed

  4. 4 CPR and defibrillation

    Intensive hands-on practice of adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation, with a training AED. The focus is on good-quality compressions, rescue breaths and keeping pauses short.

    By the end of this part you will be able to:

    • Give chest compressions at the right position and depth
    • Attach AED pads correctly and follow the device's prompts
    • Deliver a shock safely and restart CPR without delay

  5. 5 Choking

    Recognising and treating mild and severe airway obstruction in an adult, both while the casualty is conscious and if they become unresponsive.

    By the end of this part you will be able to:

    • Tell mild choking from severe choking
    • Treat a conscious choking adult
    • Explain why medical assessment is needed after treatment

  6. 6 Bleeding and shock

    Controlling significant external bleeding with direct pressure and dressings, and recognising and caring for a casualty who is going into shock.

    By the end of this part you will be able to:

    • Apply direct pressure and dressings to control bleeding
    • Recognise the signs of shock
    • Position and reassure the casualty while help is on the way

  7. 7 Seizures and minor injuries

    Keeping a casualty safe during and after a seizure, and treating the everyday injuries a workplace first aider sees most often.

    By the end of this part you will be able to:

    • Protect a casualty during a seizure
    • Treat minor cuts, grazes, bruises and splinters
    • Cool and cover minor burns and scalds

How you are assessed

What is the difference between Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work?
Emergency First Aid at Work is a one-day Level 3 qualification focused on life-threatening emergencies and common minor injuries. First Aid at Work is a longer, broader qualification; at our centre it is blended, with one day online and two days face to face. Your employer's first-aid needs assessment decides which level your workplace requires.
How long is the EFAW certificate valid for?
The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work is valid for three years. You should requalify before it expires to stay a recognised first aider. Annual refresher training is also strongly recommended, because CPR and other practical skills fade quickly if they are not used.
Is Emergency First Aid at Work enough for my workplace?
It depends on your employer's first-aid needs assessment, which looks at the risks, the number of staff and the type of work. EFAW may be enough where the assessment calls for emergency cover. If it points to wider first-aid provision, the full First Aid at Work qualification is the right choice.
What time does the course start and finish?
The course runs from 9am to 5pm. Please arrive on time, because full attendance is required. Candidates who arrive late, leave early or miss part of the day may be refused entry or become ineligible for assessment and certification.
What should I wear and bring on the day?
Wear comfortable clothes you can kneel and move in, because much of the day involves floor-level practice such as chest compressions and the recovery position. Bring valid photo ID, for example a driving licence, passport or BRP, with the same name as your booking.
How am I assessed, and is a pass guaranteed?
Your instructor watches you throughout the day and assesses your practical skills, with a theory assessment where required. A pass is not guaranteed by booking or attending. The certificate is awarded only when you have shown competence in every required skill and learning outcome.
Is there parking at the training centre?
Yes. There is free dedicated car parking at our Levenshulme centre, plus free on-road parking nearby. The centre on Moseley Road is also easy to reach by road and public transport from across South Manchester.
