Still unsure? ILS is the standard adult requirement for most ward and department roles. For children, PILS is the usual starting point, with EPALS or APLS as the advanced courses above it. Midwives and neonatal staff normally need NLS, and doctors in emergency medicine, surgery or anaesthetics often need ATLS. Email resus@plabguide.co.uk and we'll point you to the right course.

RCUK Approved
Immediate Life Support (ILS)
Immediate Life Support (ILS) is the Resuscitation Council UK course most NHS employers ask for. In one day at our Manchester centre it gives you the skills to recognise a deteriorating adult, start high-quality resuscitation, and work effectively in the team until advanced help arrives. You can take it as a full day in the training room, or as e-ILS, where you complete the online modules at home and then attend a half-day practical session with us in Manchester.
What you'll cover
Recognising the deteriorating patient
ABCDE assessment, early warning scores, and recognition and treatment of peri-arrest arrhythmias.
Basic life support and airway management
High-quality CPR, oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways, and bag-valve-mask ventilation with oxygen.
Defibrillation and rhythm recognition
Safe use of automated and manual defibrillators, and telling shockable from non-shockable rhythms.
The adult ALS algorithm in practice
Applying the RCUK algorithm, working through the reversible causes (4Hs and 4Ts), and the drug sequence.
Team roles, scenarios and assessment
Closed-loop communication, handover to the senior clinician, post-resuscitation care, and observed cardiac arrest scenarios.
Who should attend
Before you book: A current BLS certificate, or a BLS update within the last 12 months, is recommended. No advanced airway experience is needed.

Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS)
Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS) prepares you to recognise the critically ill infant or child and deliver effective resuscitation until the paediatric team arrives. We run it in the Resuscitation Council UK blended format, e-PILS: you complete the online learning first, then join a half-day hands-on session at our Manchester training suite. It is the natural first step in paediatric resuscitation and the usual foundation before EPALS or APLS.
What you'll cover
Recognition of the sick child
Paediatric ABCDE assessment, early warning scores, and spotting the child at risk before arrest occurs.
Paediatric basic life support
Infant and child BLS sequences, age-specific CPR technique, two-rescuer CPR and ventilation ratios.
Paediatric airway management
How the child's airway differs, positioning and suction, airway adjuncts, and bag-valve-mask ventilation for infants and children.
Defibrillation and respiratory emergencies
Paediatric energy levels and pad placement, and initial management of asthma, croup, bronchiolitis and anaphylaxis.
Scenarios and skills assessment
Facilitated simulation across infant and child age groups, with structured feedback and final assessment.

European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS)
European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS) is the Resuscitation Council UK's advanced paediatric course, developed with the European Resuscitation Council. Over two days in Manchester you work through the structured approach to the seriously ill or injured child, from early recognition through to leading a full paediatric resuscitation and managing post-resuscitation care.
What you'll cover
Recognising the seriously ill child
Structured paediatric ABCDE assessment, warning signs, and treating the child before cardiorespiratory arrest.
Airway, breathing and circulation
Paediatric airway adjuncts, bag-valve-mask technique, oxygen delivery, fluid resuscitation and intraosseous access.
Paediatric advanced life support algorithm
Rhythm recognition, defibrillation energy in children, weight-based drug dosing and reversible causes of arrest.
Special circumstances
Trauma, anaphylaxis, sepsis and drowning, with an introduction to resuscitation at birth.
Team leadership, scenarios and assessment
Non-technical skills, closed-loop communication, post-resuscitation care, and assessed simulated scenarios.

Newborn Life Support (NLS)
Newborn Life Support (NLS) is the Resuscitation Council UK course for anyone who may be called to a baby at birth. In one day at our Manchester centre you learn to assess the newborn, open and support the airway, give effective inflation and ventilation breaths, and move to chest compressions, vascular access and drugs if the baby does not respond. The course covers term and preterm babies, with plenty of hands-on practice on newborn manikins.
What you'll cover
Preparing for birth
The physiology of transition at birth, equipment checks, thermal care and why drying and warming come first.
Assessment at birth
Assessing tone, breathing and heart rate, and deciding quickly which babies need help.
Airway and inflation breaths
Airway positioning, mask technique, inflation breaths and ventilation, including two-person airway support.
Chest compressions, access and drugs
Coordinating compressions with ventilation, umbilical venous access, and drugs used in newborn resuscitation.
Preterm babies and scenarios
Stabilising the preterm infant, communication with parents, and assessed resuscitation scenarios.

The Immediate Life Support Instructor (ILSi) course is for healthcare professionals nominated as Instructor Potential on an ILS or PILS course. Over one day in Manchester you develop the teaching, feedback and assessment skills needed to become a certified Resuscitation Council UK ILS instructor.
Check your eligibility before booking
You must have been nominated as Instructor Potential (IP) on an ILS or PILS course run by an RCUK Approved Centre, your IP status must show on the RCUK online system, and you must take this course within 12 months of that nomination. If you're unsure, contact your nominating centre or email resus@plabguide.co.uk before you book.

Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS)
Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) is the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) course for clinicians who manage seriously ill and injured children. PLAB Guide Training Centre is an ALSG Approved Centre, and we run APLS in Manchester with pre-course e-learning followed by intensive face-to-face teaching. The course covers both medical emergencies and paediatric trauma, using the structured approach that ALSG courses are known for.

Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) is the internationally recognised trauma course, delivered in the UK under the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS). Annual training plans
Need to train your team every year? Our annual plans give GP practices, dental practices and care homes and schools and nurseries 1, 2 or 3 visits a year at their site, with free places at our centre for staff who join between visits. Plans start at £360 + VAT a year.

Which resuscitation courses do you run in Manchester?
We run seven courses at our Levenshulme centre: Immediate Life Support (ILS and e-ILS), Paediatric Immediate Life Support (e-PILS), European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS), Newborn Life Support (NLS), the ILS Instructor course (ILSi), Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
Who accredits your courses?
We are a Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) Approved Centre for ILS, PILS, EPALS, NLS and ILSi, and an Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) Approved Centre for APLS. ATLS is delivered under the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Which course do I need?
ILS is the standard adult requirement for most ward and department roles. For children, PILS is the usual starting point, with EPALS or APLS as advanced options. Midwives and neonatal staff normally need NLS, and doctors in emergency medicine, surgery or anaesthetics often need ATLS. Email resus@plabguide.co.uk if you're unsure.
What is the difference between EPALS and APLS?
Both are advanced paediatric courses. EPALS is the Resuscitation Council UK course and APLS is run by the Advanced Life Support Group, with more emphasis on the seriously injured child. Many employers accept either, so check which one your trust or rotation asks for.
Can nurses and paramedics attend?
Yes. ILS, PILS, EPALS, NLS and APLS are open to a wide range of healthcare professionals, including nurses, midwives, paramedics and allied health professionals. ATLS provider courses are for doctors.
How long are the certificates valid?
ILS and PILS certificates are usually valid for one year. EPALS, NLS, APLS and ATLS certificates are valid for four years. Some employers set their own renewal rules, so check your trust's policy.
Who can attend the ILS Instructor course?
You must have been nominated as Instructor Potential on an ILS or PILS course run by an RCUK Approved Centre, and take the ILSi course within 12 months of that nomination.
Are these courses suitable for IMGs joining the NHS?
Yes. ILS is one of the most commonly requested certificates for international medical graduates starting NHS work, and we regularly support IMGs through ILS, ALS-level courses and ATLS.
Can my employer pay, or can we book as a group?
Yes. We can invoice your employer, and we run closed group courses at our Manchester centre or on site at your trust or practice. Email resus@plabguide.co.uk for dates and rates.
