Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Do I need to be a doctor to attend?

No. ILS, PILS and EPALS are open to any registered healthcare professional. We regularly train nurses, allied health professionals, paramedics and international medical graduates alongside doctors.

Q

How long are the certificates valid?

RCUK provider certificates are valid for 1 year, after which a renewal course is required. Some NHS trusts have their own renewal requirements, so it's worth checking your employer's policy.

Q

What's the difference between PILS and EPALS?

PILS is a one-day intermediate course covering recognition and immediate management of the critically ill child. EPALS is the advanced two-day course for clinicians who lead paediatric resuscitation. PILS is the recommended starting point.

Q

What's the difference between ILS and ALS?

ILS bridges the gap between Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support. It covers more than BLS but is a shorter course than the full two-day ALS programme.

Q

Are these courses suitable for IMGs joining the NHS?

Yes. ILS in particular is one of the most commonly requested resuscitation certifications for international medical graduates starting NHS work, and we have extensive experience supporting IMGs through it.

Q

What should I bring on the day?

Photo ID, your booking confirmation, and comfortable clothing suitable for practical skills work. All equipment, course materials and refreshments are provided.

Q

Can my trust pay, or can we book as a group?

Many NHS trusts fund or reimburse these courses and we're happy to issue an invoice for your employer. We also offer group bookings and in-house delivery for teams — email resus@plabguide.co.uk for rates and dates.

Q

How do I know if I've been nominated as Instructor Potential?

Your IP nomination is communicated by the faculty of your ILS or PILS course and can be checked on the RCUK online portal. If you're unsure, contact the RCUK Approved Centre that delivered your course before booking ILSi.
