What is FREC 3? First Response Emergency Care explained

By PLAB Guide Training Centre 2 min read

The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF), known as FREC 3, is a pre-hospital care qualification for people who respond to emergencies as part of their work. If you are looking for a FREC 3 course in Manchester, this guide explains what the qualification involves and how we run it at PLAB Guide Training Centre in Levenshulme.

We are a Qualsafe Awards Approved Centre (centre number 908553).

Who FREC 3 is for

FREC 3 suits people who may be first on scene and need to manage a casualty until further help arrives, including:

  • event medics and event first aid teams
  • first responders
  • security teams
  • others whose role involves emergency care outside hospital

It goes further than workplace first aid. If you need first aid for an ordinary workplace, the First Aid at Work course is usually the better fit.

  • trauma and catastrophic bleeding
  • communication, escalation and handover
  • scenario practice and assessment

How you are assessed

Assessment runs through the course. It includes three multiple-choice theory assessments, one invigilated examination, and six practical assessments and skills tests. You need to attend all five days in full and take part in every practical exercise.

Renewing your FREC 3 certificate

Your FREC 3 certificate is valid for three years. To stay qualified, book the three-day FREC 3 Requalification course (£275) before it expires. It reassesses your practical skills, scenarios and theory, and renews your certificate for another three years.

Bring a copy of your current or previous FREC 3 certificate showing the expiry date, and identification. If your certificate has expired, contact us before booking. Depending on how long ago it expired, you may need the full five-day course.
