Course Overview

ILS – Immediate Life Support Course

Develop the practical skills and confidence required to recognise a deteriorating adult patient, prevent cardiorespiratory arrest and provide effective immediate treatment during a medical emergency.

The Resuscitation Council UK Immediate Life Support (ILS) course is a practical, one-day programme for healthcare professionals who may be required to respond to deteriorating patients or cardiac arrest while awaiting the arrival of a specialist resuscitation team. The course combines structured assessment, high-quality resuscitation skills and effective teamworking in realistic clinical scenarios.

What You Will Learn

During the ILS course, candidates learn how to:

  • Recognise and assess a deteriorating adult patient

  • Use the structured ABCDE approach

  • Identify and treat immediately life-threatening problems

  • Recognise patients at risk of cardiorespiratory arrest

  • Call for appropriate senior or emergency assistance

  • Perform high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation

  • Use an automated external defibrillator or manual defibrillator appropriately

  • Deliver simple and effective airway interventions

  • Identify potentially reversible causes of cardiac arrest

  • Participate effectively as a member of a resuscitation team

  • Demonstrate initial leadership during an emergency

  • Communicate clearly and safely in time-critical situations

The course places strong emphasis on early recognition, prompt intervention and effective teamwork to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes.

Course Structure

The ILS course is delivered over one day through a combination of:

  • Focused interactive teaching

  • Practical skill stations

  • Airway management practice

  • CPR and defibrillation training

  • ABCDE assessment workshops

  • Cardiac arrest simulations

  • Team-based clinical scenarios

  • Continuous instructor feedback

Candidates are given opportunities to practise managing realistic emergencies in a supportive learning environment. The focus is on developing a reliable, structured approach that can be applied within hospitals, clinics and other healthcare settings.

Who Is This Course For?

The ILS course is suitable for healthcare professionals who may be expected to respond to adult clinical deterioration or cardiorespiratory arrest, including:

  • Doctors and dentists

  • Nurses and nursing associates

  • Paramedics

  • Physician associates

  • Operating department practitioners

  • Pharmacists working in clinical environments

  • Allied healthcare professionals

  • Healthcare staff working in acute, community or independent settings

  • Eligible healthcare students approaching professional qualification

It is particularly relevant to professionals who are members of a resuscitation team or who may need to provide immediate care before more experienced assistance arrives.

Pre-Course Preparation

Candidates receive access to the relevant course information and learning materials before attending. Adequate preparation is important because the training day is practical and candidates are expected to participate actively in skill stations and simulations.

The current Immediate Life Support manual follows the 2025 UK Resuscitation Guidelines and provides the essential knowledge required to manage adult patients in cardiac arrest before the arrival of a specialist resuscitation team or experienced assistance.

Candidates should review their pre-course materials carefully and arrive familiar with the core principles of:

  • Adult basic life support

  • ABCDE assessment

  • Airway management

  • Recognition of cardiac arrest

  • Defibrillation

  • Resuscitation team roles

Assessment and Certification

Candidates are assessed continuously throughout the course through their participation in practical skills, structured patient assessments and simulated emergency scenarios.

Successful candidates receive a Resuscitation Council UK ILS Provider certificate, valid for one year from the course completion date.

Candidates who require continued certification should complete an appropriate ILS recertification course or repeat the provider course before their certificate expires.

Why Complete an ILS Course?

Clinical deterioration can occur in any healthcare environment. Prompt recognition and early treatment may prevent further deterioration and cardiorespiratory arrest.

Completing the ILS course can help healthcare professionals:

  • Respond to emergencies in a calm and structured manner

  • Improve their recognition of critically unwell patients

  • Strengthen their CPR and defibrillation skills

  • Communicate more effectively during emergencies

  • Contribute safely to a resuscitation team
