The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF) is a regulated, one-day qualification designed for employees who may be appointed as emergency first aiders within the workplace.

The course provides candidates with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to assess an incident, manage an emergency and provide immediate first aid until professional medical assistance arrives.

Emergency First Aid at Work training enables a first aider to provide emergency assistance to someone who is injured or becomes ill at work. Employers must assess their workplace first-aid needs and provide appropriate equipment, facilities and trained personnel.

What You Will Learn

During the course, candidates learn how to:

• Understand the role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider

• Assess an incident safely

• Protect themselves, the casualty and bystanders

• Check a casualty’s level of response

• Open and maintain the airway

• Check for normal breathing

• Manage an unresponsive breathing casualty

• Place a casualty in the recovery position

• Perform effective adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation

• Use an automated external defibrillator safely

• Manage choking in an adult casualty

• Control external bleeding

• Recognise and manage shock

• Manage minor injuries

• Respond appropriately to seizures

• Call the emergency services and provide a clear handover

• Monitor a casualty until further help arrives

Assessing an Emergency

Candidates practise a structured approach to:

• Identifying hazards

• Checking for danger

• Assessing responsiveness

• Establishing immediate priorities

• Summoning help

• Providing safe and appropriate first aid

Unresponsive Casualty

Candidates learn how to:

• Open the airway

• Assess breathing

• Place a breathing casualty in the recovery position

• Monitor the casualty

• Respond if the casualty vomits or regurgitates

• Recognise when CPR is required

CPR and AED

Candidates practise:

• Correct hand positioning

• High-quality chest compressions

• Rescue breaths

• Minimising interruptions

• Switching on and operating an AED

• Correct AED pad placement

• Following visual and spoken instructions

• Delivering a shock safely

• Resuming CPR immediately

Choking

Candidates learn how to recognise and manage:

• Mild airway obstruction

• Severe airway obstruction

• Conscious choking

• An unresponsive choking casualty

• The need for medical assessment following treatment

Bleeding and Shock

Candidates learn how to:

• Identify significant external bleeding

• Apply direct pressure

• Use dressings appropriately

• Recognise the signs of shock

• Position and reassure the casualty

• Arrange urgent medical assistance

Seizures and Minor Injuries

The course also covers the immediate management of:

• Seizures

• Minor cuts and grazes

• Bruises

• Small splinters

• Minor burns and scalds

Employers should select the appropriate level of first-aid training after completing a workplace first-aid needs assessment. EFAW may be suitable where that assessment identifies a need for emergency first-aid provision rather than the broader First Aid at Work qualification.

This is a one-day, classroom-based course combining theory with practical training.

Assessment

Candidates are assessed through practical demonstrations, ongoing observation and any required theory assessment.

To successfully complete the qualification, candidates must demonstrate that they can:

• Assess an incident safely

• Manage an unresponsive casualty

• Perform effective CPR

• Use an AED safely

• Manage choking

• Control external bleeding

• Recognise and manage shock

• Respond appropriately to seizures and minor injuries

Booking or attending the course does not automatically guarantee successful completion.

Certification

Successful candidates receive the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF).

The qualification certificate is valid for three years. Annual refresher training is strongly recommended to help first aiders maintain their practical skills and confidence.

Candidates should complete appropriate requalification training before their certificate expires.
