Our ALS Preparation Course is a practical, supportive programme designed to help healthcare professionals understand the ALS approach, strengthen their resuscitation skills and attend their official Resuscitation Council UK ALS course with greater confidence.

This is particularly valuable for candidates who understand the theory but feel shaky when managing a simulated cardiac arrest, interpreting rhythms, choosing treatments, leading a team or communicating under pressure.

Important Course Status

This is an independent preparation course developed and delivered by PLAB Guide Training Centre.

It is:

• Not an official Resuscitation Council UK course

• Not approved, accredited or certified by RCUK

• Not a substitute for the official RCUK ALS Provider course

• Not an ALS qualification

• Not able to award an RCUK ALS certificate

• Not able to guarantee an Instructor Potential nomination

Its purpose is to prepare candidates for their official course, clinical practice and relevant postgraduate examinations.

No previous ALS qualification is required, although candidates should have an appropriate healthcare background and basic resuscitation knowledge.

• Recognising the deteriorating adult patient

• Using the ABCDE assessment

• Identifying and treating life-threatening problems

• Recognising cardiorespiratory arrest

• Delivering high-quality CPR

• Using a manual defibrillator safely

• Recognising shockable and non-shockable rhythms

• Managing ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia

• Managing pulseless electrical activity and asystole

• Understanding the advanced life support algorithm

• Identifying reversible causes of cardiac arrest

• Using the 4 Hs and 4 Ts effectively

• Understanding appropriate emergency medications

• Managing peri-arrest arrhythmias

• Planning safe post-resuscitation care

• Communicating effectively during emergencies

• Leading and participating in a resuscitation team

• Structuring answers for OSCE-style resuscitation stations

• Performing confidently during simulated assessments

Practical, Scenario-Based Training

This is not simply a lecture or algorithm-review session.

Candidates participate in realistic scenarios that allow them to practise:

• Initial assessment and recognition of cardiac arrest

• Calling for help and allocating team roles

• CPR quality and interruption control

• Rhythm interpretation

• Safe defibrillation

• Medication planning

Scenarios are followed by constructive feedback so candidates can understand what went well, identify weaknesses and repeat key elements with greater confidence.

Preparation for MRCEM and FRCEM OSCEs

The course is also suitable for candidates preparing for postgraduate emergency medicine examinations.

Candidates can practise how to:

• Verbalise a safe resuscitation approach

Instructor Potential is awarded only through the relevant official provider-course process. Attendance at this preparation course does not guarantee nomination or influence any independent RCUK faculty decision.

A candidate who completes our ALS Preparation Course and subsequently fails an eligible official RCUK ALS Provider course may apply for a refund of the ALS Preparation Course tuition fee, provided that:

• The official ALS course is taken within three months of completing our preparation course

• The candidate attended the full preparation course

• All required preparatory activities were completed

• The candidate participated fully in teaching and simulations

• The candidate attended and completed the official ALS course

• Valid documentary evidence of the unsuccessful official ALS result is supplied

• All other guarantee conditions are satisfied

The guarantee applies only to the fee paid directly for our ALS Preparation Course. It does not cover the cost of the official ALS course, travel, accommodation, study materials, loss of earnings or any other associated expense.
