Recognition of the Sick Child
Paediatric ABCDE assessment, early warning scores, recognising the child at risk of deterioration before arrest occurs.
Paediatric Basic Life Support (PBLS)
Infant and child BLS sequences, age-specific CPR techniques, two-rescuer CPR, rescue breathing ratios and rates.
Paediatric Airway Management
Airway anatomy differences in children, positioning, suction, use of OPAs and NPAs in paediatrics, bag-valve-mask technique for infants and children.
Defibrillation in Children
Safe and correct energy levels for paediatric defibrillation, AED use in children, paediatric electrode placement and rhythm recognition.
Paediatric ALS Algorithm
RCUK paediatric ALS algorithm in practice, reversible causes in children, drug dosing by weight (adrenaline, amiodarone), vascular access considerations.
Respiratory Emergencies in Children
Management of acute severe asthma, croup, bronchiolitis and anaphylaxis in children โ recognition and initial stabilisation.
Team Scenarios & Skills Assessment

Do I need to work in paediatrics to attend PILS?
No. Any healthcare professional who may encounter a child in an emergency benefits from PILS. This includes GPs, A&E staff, paramedics, and general ward nurses.
How long is the PILS certificate valid?
The PILS provider certificate is valid for 1 year. Renewal is required annually. Check your employer's policy as some NHS trusts have specific renewal requirements.
Is PILS the same as EPALS?
No. PILS is a 1-day intermediate course. EPALS (European Paediatric Advanced Life Support) is a more advanced 2-day course. PILS is the recommended starting point if you do not yet hold EPALS.
Is this course suitable for IMGs starting in the NHS?
Yes. PILS is frequently required for IMGs entering paediatric, A&E, or GP roles. PLAB Guide Academy is experienced in supporting international medical graduates through this qualification.
