What it is

Medical appraisal in Manchester

Every licensed doctor in the UK takes part in an annual appraisal. It is a structured, confidential discussion with a trained appraiser about your practice, development and wellbeing. Your appraisals support revalidation, which normally takes place every five years on the recommendation of your Responsible Officer (GMC: revalidation).

Who we appraise

Doctors we work with

  • Consultants

    NHS, private or mixed practice.

  • SAS doctors

    Specialty doctors and associate specialists.

  • GPs

Partners, salaried, portfolio and locum GPs.

  • Locum doctors

Including advice for doctors working out how to connect to a Responsible Officer or Suitable Person.

  • Trainees

Doctors who need independent appraisal support outside ARCP.

  • International medical graduates

Help with UK appraisal expectations and presenting overseas CPD.

What we review

Supporting information

Your appraisal reviews the supporting information the GMC expects doctors to collect and reflect on (GMC: supporting information for appraisal and revalidation):

  • Continuing professional development
  • Quality improvement activity
  • Significant events
  • Feedback from colleagues
  • Feedback from patients or those you provide medical services to
  • Review of complaints and compliments

We also review your previous Personal Development Plan (PDP), agree a new one, and talk about wellbeing and workload.

How it works

How your appraisal works

  1. Book. Choose in person at our Manchester centre or a secure video call. We send a preparation checklist.
  2. Prepare your portfolio. Gather your supporting information and previous PDP, ideally at least 5 working days before your meeting.
  3. Pre-appraisal review. Your appraiser reads your supporting information before the meeting.
  4. The appraisal meeting. Usually 60 to 90 minutes, in a confidential setting.
  5. Summary and PDP. Your appraiser writes the appraisal summary and agrees your new PDP with you.
  6. Submission. We help you submit the outputs to your Responsible Officer.
