The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is a regulated, full paediatric first aid qualification delivered over two days. It has been specifically designed to meet the paediatric first aid criteria set out within the Department for Education’s Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework.

The course is suitable for early years professionals, registered childminders and others who are responsible for the care and safety of infants and children.

Meeting Early Years Foundation Stage Requirements

The Early Years Foundation Stage framework requires early years providers in England to ensure that at least one person with a current and full paediatric first aid certificate is available on the premises whenever children are present.

Providers should consider:

• The number of children in their care

• The number of staff on duty

• The size and layout of the premises

• Staff working patterns

• Outings and off-site activities

• How quickly a qualified paediatric first aider can respond

Organisations may therefore need more than one trained paediatric first aider to maintain appropriate cover throughout the working day.

Infant and Child CPR

Learners practise the important differences between infant and child resuscitation, including:

• Safe airway positioning

• Initial rescue breaths

• Correct hand and finger placement

• Appropriate chest compression techniques

• Compression depth and rate

• Effective rescue breaths

• Minimising interruptions

• Calling for emergency assistance

• Continuing CPR safely until help arrives

Choking

The course covers the recognition and management of:

• Mild choking

• Severe airway obstruction

• Choking in a conscious infant

• Choking in a conscious child

• An infant or child who becomes unresponsive

• Appropriate post-incident medical assessment

Serious Illness and Medical Emergencies

Learners are taught how to recognise and respond to important childhood medical emergencies, including:

• Anaphylaxis

• Asthma

• Meningitis

• Seizures

• Febrile convulsions

• Diabetic emergencies

• Shock

• Sudden deterioration

The course places strong emphasis on early recognition, prompt escalation and safe monitoring.

Injuries

Training includes the immediate management of:

• External bleeding

• Wounds

• Burns and scalds

• Fractures

• Head injuries

• Suspected spinal injuries

• Eye injuries

• Poisoning

• Bites and stings

Learners are taught how to provide appropriate first aid while avoiding actions that may cause further harm.

To successfully complete the qualification, candidates must demonstrate that they can safely assess and manage a range of paediatric first aid emergencies.

Booking and attendance do not automatically guarantee successful completion.

Certification

Successful learners receive a personalised Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) e-certificate after their results have been submitted and approved, subject to the training centre’s certification arrangements and any required actions.

Printed certificates may be available at an additional cost.

The qualification is normally valid for three years. Learners should complete appropriate requalification training before their certificate expires and undertake regular refresher training to maintain their knowledge and practical skills.
