PILS and ePILS – Paediatric Immediate Life Support Courses

Develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to recognise and manage a seriously ill or injured infant or child.

The Resuscitation Council UK Paediatric Immediate Life Support course is designed for healthcare professionals who may be required to assess a deteriorating child, provide immediate treatment and manage respiratory or cardiorespiratory arrest until a specialist resuscitation team or more experienced assistance arrives.

Candidates may choose between two approved learning formats:

• PILS: a full-day, face-to-face course

• ePILS: a blended course combining online learning with a half-day, face-to-face practical session

Both routes cover the same essential Paediatric Immediate Life Support principles and lead to a Resuscitation Council UK PILS Provider certificate for successful candidates.

What You Will Learn

During the course, candidates develop the knowledge and skills required to:

• Recognise a seriously ill or deteriorating infant or child

• Apply a structured paediatric ABCDE assessment

• Identify possible causes of clinical deterioration

• Provide appropriate immediate treatment

• Prevent progression to cardiorespiratory arrest

• Recognise respiratory and cardiorespiratory arrest

• Perform effective paediatric basic life support

• Provide bag-mask ventilation

• Use appropriate emergency equipment

• Participate effectively in a paediatric resuscitation team

• Communicate clearly during time-critical emergencies

• Treat a child until a resuscitation team or more experienced assistance arrives

PILS is particularly suitable for healthcare professionals who require skills beyond basic life support but do not require the more comprehensive training provided by the two-day EPALS course.

PILS – Full-Day Face-to-Face Course

The traditional PILS course is delivered as a full day of face-to-face training at our Manchester training centre.

Candidates complete focused teaching, practical skill stations, workshops and realistic paediatric emergency simulations throughout the day.

This format may be particularly suitable for candidates who:

• Prefer direct, instructor-led learning

• Benefit from completing theory and practical training in one setting

• Want more face-to-face contact with instructors

• Prefer a full day of structured teaching and simulation

Candidates must complete all required pre-course preparation and review the course materials before attending.

ePILS – Online Learning and Half-Day Practical Course

The ePILS course is a flexible blended-learning alternative. It combines online pre-course learning with a half-day, face-to-face practical session.

After enrolment, candidates receive access to the required e-learning through the Resuscitation Council UK Learning Management System. The online modules must be completed before attending the face-to-face course.

The half-day practical session focuses on:

• Essential paediatric resuscitation skills

• Recognition and management of the deteriorating child

• Practical airway and ventilation skills

• Teamwork and communication

• Cardiorespiratory arrest simulations

• Continuous practical assessment

The ePILS format allows candidates to complete the theoretical component in their own time before attending the practical training session. Resuscitation Council UK describes ePILS as half a day of e-learning followed by half a day of face-to-face learning.

Immediate Access to ePILS Learning

Candidates booking ePILS are normally provided access to the online learning shortly after successful enrolment and registration.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to:

• Log in to the learning platform promptly

• Check that their access is working

• Complete all required modules

• Complete any required pre-course assessment

• Finish the e-learning before the face-to-face session

Candidates should not leave their online learning until the day before the course.

• Satisfactory performance in practical scenarios

Booking or attending the course does not guarantee successful completion.

Certification

Successful candidates completing either PILS or ePILS receive a Resuscitation Council UK PILS Provider certificate.

The certificate is valid for one year from the course completion date and can be downloaded from the candidate’s Resuscitation Council UK LMS account. In-date provider certificates can also be independently verified by candidates and employers.
